“Art is not what you see,
but what you make others see.”
Having attended a number of mark making workshops I became inspired to capture the rural landscape in my surrounding locality. I have adopted the creative process encouraged in the workshops and gratefully acknowledge this influence on my work.
Out sketching I make quick, intuitive and expressive marks on paper (using brushes, soft pastel, pencil, acrylic paint and Indian ink applied with a pipette) that stand in for various elements of the landscape…
The process I follow starts out in the landscape where I make marks that stand for the elements experienced there. In the studio I cut, tear, crop and rebuild my sketches into new pieces / collages that are stored in numerous sketch books. I use these as the basis for my paintings and work to create pieces that capture the original experiences of being out in the landscape.
